Stretch marks… argh!

They are one of those ugliest flaws that can ever appear on your skin. Having them removed through an in-clinic procedure can be costly. The good news is there are some natural and inexpensive ways in getting rid of these unsightly marks right in the comfort of your own home.

Why do stretch marks appear on the skin?

Stretch marks are basically skin scars or breaks due to intense stretching of the skin. The skin may ‘over stretch’ when you gain excessive weight or get pregnant in the case of women. And once you’ve lost the extra weight rapidly or have given birth, ugly scars will then appear on your skin.

Now depending on your skin’s natural condition or qualities, stretch marks can be severe or quite minimal. Unfortunately, there are people who are more prone to developing these marks than others.

Usually people with dry and dehydrated skin get stretch marks. Thus if you’ve observed, there are some women who tend to get very minimal stretch marks while others get severe and quite ugly red marks after pregnancy?

The answer is simple: skin elasticity and hydration levels. The more elastic and hydrated your skin is from the inside and out, the more it becomes resistant to skin ‘breakage’. So the key really is just to improve your skin’s moisture levels as well as elasticity.

Tips for increasing skin elasticity:

1. Eat an antioxidant-rich diet

Antioxidant vitamins especially vitamin C help increase and maintain your collagen levels. Collagen is a protein that makes your skin become elastic and supple. Without collagen, your skin tends to get dry and prone to wrinkling and scarring. Pregnant women, however, need to consult their doctor first before taking any supplements during pregnancy.

2. Add more fruits and vegetables on your plate

Improving your diet is another way to prevent stretch marks appearance. Why? They are rich in vitamins and minerals that keep your skin hydrated and elastic. Nutrients found in whole and organic colored fruits/leafy greens help optimize your overall skin health. Eating right doesn’t just help you avoid stretch marks, it also keeps your skin clear and glowing. Good nutrition, as always, will certainly show on your skin.

3. Moisturize

Again, hydration and moisturization both from the inside and out are keys to preventing the appearance of and even erasing existing stretch marks. Drink plenty of water everyday. Upgrade your water by adding in lemon juice to your water. It alkalizes your system and also gives you a good dose of collagen-boosting antioxidants.

After bathing, it’ll be smart to apply natural moisturizers such as essential oils and organic butters. Coconut oil, argan oil, olive oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, and other natural emollients are a perfect way to prevent stretch marks from appearing ever on your skin. Pregnant mothers need to increase their skin’s elasticity as early as possible or at the onset of their pregnancy; specifically during the first trimester of while their tummy hasn’t expanded much yet.

Natural moisturizers like coconut oil are very safe to use and don’t contain chemicals that may leach into the mother’s skin and harm the baby inside. By using organic moisturizers, you don’t need to worry about harming your baby.

4. Maintain a healthy weight

In any case, it is always best to maintain an ideal weight. Obesity causes stretch marks. During pregnancy it is also not advisable to gain too much weight as not only will this cause severe stretch marks, it also puts your health at risk. So eat right and stay active.

For those of you who’ve been wanting to get rid of side butt stretch marks or pregnancy marks on your belly or chest, exfoliation by using just a few natural ingredients can really help improve your skin’s appearance.

How to prepare your own stretch marks exfoliating scrub:

In a jar just put a teaspoon of white sugar, one tablespoon of coconut oil or castor oil or any oil of your choice, half of lemon juice, and vitamin E oil. Mix these ingredients well and store inside your fridge.

Once mixed, apply the oil solution onto the desired spot. Then using a soft bristled brush, gently run the brush in circular movement. Do this for about 2-3 minutes daily for about two weeks. After a couple of weeks, you’ll see a visible difference on your skin.

Improve your skin health from the inside by continually eating right and making sure you have enough nutrients that maintain soft and elastic skin.
