It can be frustrating to try to grow out your nails and end up breaking them before they even reach the desired length.

Boost your keratins

What are keratins? These are protein structural fibers that build your hair and nails. Keratin proteins are basically the building blocks of your nails and hair. Without sufficient levels of keratin, your nails will certainly become very weak and prone to breakage. To increase your keratin levels, all you need is to increase your protein intake. Make sure to get your protein from good, natural protein sources such as fish, chicken, lean meat, legumes, greek yogurt, almonds, seeds, and similar items.

Take biotin

Many are skeptics when in fact studies back the efficiency of biotin as a nail and hair strengthening nutrient. This B-vitamin is an essential vitamin that your body needs to grow your hair and nails stronger and healthier. According to a study published in a journal of dermatology, vitamin B7 or biotin can improve the quality of your hair, skin, and nails when taken as a supplement. Thus, if you want to grow durable and longer fingernails, it’s time to consider biotin supplementation.

Proper nail filing

A lot of women can be doing this step the wrong (and damaging) way. If you want to get a perfect manicure and nail finish, it is important to file your nails properly. Make sure to file your nails in one direction to avoid damaging your nails. Going back and forth while filing can tear up the edges of your nails.

Moisturize your nails and cuticles

Moisturizing your hands and nails is a great way to strengthen your nails. You need to do this especially if you’ve been in the water. Include your cuticles by massaging them with oil. One of the best oils to use is argan oil. If not, you can also use coconut oil and other natural butters such as shea or cocoa butter to use for skin and nail massage. Doing this regularly can strengthen your nails and cuticles. If your nails are currently quite weak, you may want to apply an overnight nail treatment by wearing gloves after oil or moisturizer application.

Avoid prolonged water exposure

Especially with chlorinated water, try to avoid submerging your fingernails in the water for a prolonged period of time. You can wear a pair of gloves for unavoidable situations such as dishwashing.

Quit chemical-based polish removers

Chemicals, as they are, can eventually weaken your nails and nail beds. If you don’t want to suffer from dry, brittle nails, or hangnails, it is best to at least limit your application with nail cosmetics and removers. If you can find any, you may opt for a non-acetone based polish removers to avoid drying out your nails. Actually, there are easy DIY non-toxic recipes for removing your nail polish.

There you have it ladies. If you want to grow stronger, and healthier nails, try the above steps and see the difference!
